Break into cybersecurity in Pakistan: 5 free ways to actually start

Hands-on, free, and beginner-friendly. Where to start, plus the entry role to target first.

Cybersecurity is one of the few tech fields where you can learn almost everything hands-on and for free, and where Pakistani freshers genuinely get hired. The problem is people do not know where to start, so they buy an expensive course they never finish. You do not need to. Start with these five free, practical resources, in roughly this order.

  1. TryHackMe. The best beginner starting point. It teaches you by doing, right in your browser, with guided “rooms” that walk you through real hacking and defense concepts step by step. There is a free tier with plenty to learn before you ever pay. Start here.
  2. picoCTF. Beginner capture-the-flag challenges, completely free, built originally for students. CTFs are puzzles that teach you to actually find and exploit weaknesses, and they are genuinely fun, which keeps you going.
  3. OverTheWire. Free “wargames” that drill your Linux and command-line fundamentals, which is the base everything in security sits on. The Bandit game is the classic starting point.
  4. Google Cybersecurity Certificate (on Coursera). A solid structured foundation covering the basics of the field and entry-level job skills. Honest note: it is free if you use Coursera’s “audit” option or apply for financial aid; the certificate itself normally sits behind a fee, so do not expect “100% free” unless you go the audit or aid route.
  5. Cisco Networking Academy. Free introductory courses, including networking and security basics. Networking knowledge is underrated in security, and Cisco’s intro material is a free, respected place to get it.

The entry role to target: SOC Analyst. A Security Operations Center (SOC) Analyst is the most common first job in cyber. You monitor systems, spot suspicious activity, and respond to alerts. It is the realistic door-opener for a fresher, so aim your learning and your CV at it rather than at vague “ethical hacker” titles.

How to turn this into a job. Do not just collect certificates. As you work through TryHackMe and the CTFs, keep a simple portfolio: write up what you did, what you found, and how you solved it, on a blog, a GitHub README, or even LinkedIn posts. That write-up is what proves to an employer you can actually do the work. Build the portfolio from these free labs, then apply for SOC Analyst roles.

Everything above is free or has a real free path, so the only thing between you and starting is opening the first link. Comment the keyword and I will DM you this exact list.

Free either way — an account just keeps your list.
