How to actually get an AI/automation job in Pakistan
Where the roles are, the skills that get you hired, and the first project to build.
AI and automation is the fastest-growing hiring lane in Pakistani tech — and most students have no idea where to even look. Here’s the honest path.
Where the roles actually are:
- Product companies & startups building AI features (chatbots, RAG, agents, internal automation).
- Software houses / agencies now taking AI + automation client work.
- Remote / international clients — this is where the dollars are. Look on Wellfound, Upwork’s AI category, and Y Combinator’s Work at a Startup.
- Automation-specific gigs — businesses paying to connect their tools and cut manual work.
The skills that get you hired (learn in this order):
- Python — the language of AI. Get it to job-ready.
- ML basics — enough to understand models, not necessarily train them from scratch.
- LLMs in practice — prompting, RAG (chat with documents), and basic agents. This is what most “AI jobs” actually want right now.
- Automation tools — n8n, Make, or Zapier. Huge, underrated demand.
- APIs + a bit of cloud — to ship what you build.
The first project that lands the job: build one real thing and put it on GitHub — an AI assistant that answers from a company’s documents (RAG), or an automation that takes a repetitive task and does it end to end. One working, deployed project beats any certificate.
Already doing low-paid data annotation? That’s a foot in the door — level up to building the models/automation, not just labelling for them.
Free either way — an account just keeps your list.
