Is web dev dead in Pakistan? The honest answer
Web dev isn't dead, it shifted. Here's what the job market actually wants now.
Every few days someone messages me: “bhai, web dev ka scope khatam ho gaya, AI aa gaya hai.” It’s a fair worry, so instead of opinions, look at the job posts yourself: open Rozee.pk and LinkedIn, search fresher web-developer roles in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, and count them. You’ll find plenty. Web dev isn’t dead. It shifted.
Why it’s not dead: every business still needs a website, a dashboard, an admin panel, a portal. That work hasn’t gone anywhere, there’s always a backlog of it in Pakistan. What changed is what companies want from a web developer.
What shifted:
- Plain HTML/CSS/jQuery pages are out. Those get done by templates and AI now.
- Modern stacks are in. React/Next.js on the front end, real APIs and databases on the back end (Laravel, Node, Django), and increasingly, AI features wired in (a chatbot, a search, a recommendation, a summariser). “Web dev + a bit of AI integration” is a very hireable combo right now.
- “Can you build and ship a real app” beats “I know HTML.” Employers want someone who can take a feature from idea to deployed, not someone who only styles pages.
So what should you do?
- Pick one stack and go deep (for most people: JavaScript → React/Next + a backend like Node or Laravel + a database). Don’t collect five half-learned stacks.
- Learn to add AI to a web app — calling an LLM API, building a simple RAG search, adding an AI feature to a normal CRUD app. That’s what makes you stand out from every other “web dev.”
- Build and deploy 2–3 real projects and put them on GitHub with live links.
Where to actually find web-dev and AI/ML jobs:
Local (Pakistan):
- Rozee.pk — the main Pakistani job board.
- LinkedIn — search by stack + city; set alerts and apply early.
- Indeed Pakistan — aggregates a lot of local listings.
Remote / international (you stay in Pakistan, work for foreign companies):
- Wellfound — startup jobs, hire direct (great for both web dev and AI/ML roles).
- We Work Remotely and RemoteOK — big remote job boards, new roles daily.
- Turing — vetted remote roles with US companies; strong for both web/full-stack and AI/ML.
- Arc.dev — remote developer jobs.
- Y Combinator — Work at a Startup — funded startups, lots of AI/ML roles, many remote.
Freelance (good for first income + proof):
- Upwork and Fiverr — client work in both web dev and AI/automation; a good way to build a track record while you apply for jobs.
One honest note: remote and international roles want clear English, timezone overlap, and a portfolio that speaks for you, so lead every application with your GitHub + live links.
Bottom line: the “web dev is dead” fear is really “plain web dev is commoditised.” Learn a modern stack, add AI on top, ship real things, and the scope is very much alive.
